Getting around Potenza
City buses run by Trotta Mobility and a 1.3 km system of public escalators, the longest in Europe according to the national tourism agency, linking the lower districts with the centre. Trenitalia trains to Salerno-Naples and Taranto; the line to Melfi and Foggia has had RFI works; Ferrovie Appulo Lucane to Bari. No airport in the region: Naples, Bari or Salerno.

Buses and escalators
Urban bus transport is run by Trotta Mobility on behalf of the Comune: lines linking the centre, the lower districts, Macchia Romana, the hospital and the stations, with reduced frequencies in the evening and on holidays. Potenza's peculiarity is its free public escalators, which overcome the height differences between districts: the whole system measures 1.3 km and is presented by the national tourism agency as the longest in Europe. The Santa Lucia escalator (600 m, opened 2010) links Via Tammone and the districts of Poggio Tre Galli, Cocuzzo and Verderuolo with Porta Salza in the historic centre; the first escalator (1994) climbs from Viale Marconi to Via del Popolo; since 2021 the Basento route connects Potenza Centrale station with the centre. There is no funicular: the remaining height differences are covered by public lifts.
Trains, coaches, airports
Potenza Centrale (Trenitalia) lies on the Battipaglia–Potenza–Metaponto line: regional trains to Salerno and Naples and to Taranto, with some Intercity services to Rome and Taranto. On the line to Foggia, RFI began electrifying the Rocchetta–Potenza section in 2024 and in September 2026 reopened the Potenza–Melfi section: services should be checked on the Trenitalia timetable. The Ferrovie Appulo Lucane run the narrow-gauge line to Avigliano, Altamura and Bari, with urban stops (including Potenza Inferiore and Potenza Città), and regional bus routes. Long-distance coaches link Potenza to Naples, Salerno, Rome and Bari. Basilicata has no airports: the nearest are Naples Capodichino, Bari Palese and Salerno Costa d'Amalfi, about two hours away by car or by train and bus.
Car and ZTL
The RA5 Potenza–Sicignano motorway link joins the A2 Salerno–Reggio Calabria motorway; the SS407 Basentana descends to Metaponto and the Ionian Sea; the SS658 leads to Melfi and the A16. Via Pretoria is pedestrian and the historic centre is a limited-traffic zone; parking is paid in central areas and the park-and-ride lots below, linked by the escalators, are the most practical option for those arriving by car.
