Identity: port, Priamar fortress and the Leon Pancaldo Tower
Savona is shaped by its port, which the city's tourism site presents as a cruise stop, and by its landmarks on the sea: the Priamar Fortress, built by the Genoese in 1542, and the Leon Pancaldo Tower. The municipality has a section on participation and neighbourhoods.
Sections: Geography · History · Population · Languages · Time zone · Public holidays
A port city
The municipal tourism portal says Savona has a well-known port of call for cruises, and the Port Authority lists it as one of Italy's main cruise ports. The commercial port is in the part farthest from the city, where deep waters allow the largest ships to berth; according to the same source, the older quays of the historic basin were converted to tourist uses in the late 1990s.
Landmarks on the sea
The tourism portal lists the historic centre with the harbour basin and the towers and fortresses among the landmarks. The Priamar Fortress (corso Mazzini 15) is described as built by the Genoese in 1542 and now turned into a cultural and social hub; the Leon Pancaldo Tower, or Torre della Quarda, is called the symbol of the city.
Neighbourhoods
The municipality's site has a «Participation and neighbourhoods» section with Territorial Committees, a «proposal of zones» and news from the neighbourhoods. For residents' parking the municipality distinguishes two zones, Centro and Villapiana.
