Overview
What kind of city
Siena is a provincial capital in Tuscany. The UNESCO record describes it as the embodiment of a medieval city, with a Gothic appearance preserved from the 12th to the 15th century, and as a city devised as a work of art that blends into the surrounding landscape; the site has been inscribed since 1995 under criteria (i), (ii) and (iv).
Palio, university, bank
The Comune states that the Palio is run in Piazza del Campo on 2 July and 16 August every year, with extra races possible for exceptional events. The University of Siena traces its earliest documented date to a podestarile decree of 26 December 1240; Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena says on its own site that it began in 1472 as a Monte di Pietà and is the oldest bank still operating in the world.
