The industrial hub

On 18 May 2021 the Sicilian Region and the municipalities of Priolo Gargallo, Augusta, Melilli and Siracusa signed the memorandum of understanding asking the Ministry to recognise the industrial hub as a complex industrial crisis area, with a conversion and redevelopment project. According to the Region, the chemical, oil and energy hub provides about 7,500 direct and indirect jobs, 3,250 of them in the large companies; multinationals operating there include Lukoil, Sonatrach, Sasol, Versalis, Erg Power and Air Liquide.

The refinery

According to the Ministry of Enterprises (23 May 2023), the ISAB refinery at Priolo processes about 350,000 barrels of crude a day, a fifth of Italy's refining capacity, and the hub provides direct and indirect work to more than 3,000 people, about 1,000 of them at ISAB, in an area with very high unemployment. The site was declared of national strategic interest on 3 February 2023; its sale to Goi Energy was authorised with conditions, including keeping employment levels for five years and an investment plan for the green transition.
