Overview

In short

Syracuse began as a Greek colony in the eighth century BC on the island of Ortigia, inhabited for about three thousand years and still the city's historic centre. Besieged by the Athenians in 416–413 BC and sacked by the Romans in 212 BC, it was taken by the Arabs in 878; Normans and Aragonese rebuilt its fortifications. After the 1693 earthquake it was rebuilt in Baroque forms; in the twentieth century came Corso Matteotti and, in the 1950s and 1960s, the large industrial plants north of the city.

What sets it apart

Since 2005 Ortigia and the Neapolis, with the rock-cut necropolis of Pantalica, have been a UNESCO site. Every spring the INDA Foundation stages ancient drama in the Greek Theatre; on 13 December the procession of Saint Lucy crosses the city. According to ARPA Sicilia, air quality is affected above all by the industrial area of Augusta, Priolo and Melilli. Trains link Syracuse with the Catania Fontanarossa airport stop.

Living

  • Cost of living

Since 2013 Siracusa has applied the municipal IRPEF surcharge at a single rate of 0.8%. For SAIS city buses there are weekly, monthly, Under 20 and annual passes; with regional funds the Comune has financed a free monthly pass for resident students under 20 below an ISEE threshold. For TARI, the discount linked to the weighing waste stations counts.

  • Housing

Public housing in the province belongs to the Istituto Autonomo Case Popolari di Siracusa, on via Augusto Von Platen, which handles leases, transfers, sales and maintenance. Those moving to Ortigia, inside the limited-traffic zone, must request the permit as residents, tenants with a lease or owners. OMI rents and prices for the central area are in the data.

  • Daily life

Change of residence is done online on ANPR with SPID or CIE, or by appointment at the registry office on via San Sebastiano or at the district offices. The Ortigia ZTL permit is requested online from the municipal police. Nine weighing waste stations complement door-to-door collection.

Discovering

  • Identity

The heart of the city is Ortigia, an island inhabited for three thousand years, with the Cathedral born from the temple of Athena. The patron Saint Lucy is celebrated on 13 December with the procession of the silver statue to the basilica of Santa Lucia al Sepolcro and the return to the cathedral on the 20th. The Greek Theatre hosts INDA's season every year.

  • Climate & environment

Syracuse was rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake and damaged by that of 13 December 1990, which killed 18 people in Carlentini. ARPA Sicilia attributes the poor air quality perceived in the area, Syracuse included, mainly to industrial sources; residents report odours through the NOSE project. Climate data in the block.
