Climate and air in Trento

Alpine valley-floor climate with Mediterranean influences from Lake Garda: cold winters with temperature inversions and some snow, hot summers cooled by the Ora del Garda breeze, rain spread across the year. Good air quality for a city of the Po-Alpine valley, with few days above the PM10 limit; APPA publishes a daily bulletin.

Seasons

Trento sits at about 190 metres in a narrow north–south valley that channels the winds and holds cold air in winter. Winter is cold and often overcast on the valley floor, with temperature inversions leaving sunshine on the hills (Povo, Villazzano, Sardagna) while the centre stays in shade and haze; snow falls a few times a year and stays on the Bondone, where you can ski twenty minutes from the city.

Summer is hot, with muggy peaks in July, but the Ora del Garda, the regular breeze rising up the valley from the lake in the afternoon, cools and dries the air; evening thunderstorms are frequent. Rain is spread over the whole year with peaks in spring and autumn. The nearness of Lake Garda makes the lower valley's climate milder than altitude and latitude would suggest.

Air quality and hazards

Air quality is clearly better than in the cities of the plain: days above the daily PM10 limit are few, concentrated in winter inversion phases, and the air exchange provided by valley winds disperses pollutants. The provincial environmental protection agency (APPA) runs the monitoring network with stations in the city and publishes a daily bulletin with the air quality index; the Province adopts anti-smog measures in critical periods (limits on wood heating, incentives to replace stoves).

Natural hazards are floods of the Adige and side streams (Fersina) in very wet autumns, landslides on the slopes and, in the mountains, avalanches. The provincial civil protection system issues alerts and the city has embankments and defences upgraded after the 1966 flood.
