When and how
Miramare castle is the most visited site: reach it by urban bus along the Barcola waterfront; the park is free to enter, the museum should be booked online on spring and autumn weekends. State museums are free on the first Sunday of the month. The city is uncrowded compared with Venice or Florence: the only peak is Barcolana week, the regatta on the second Sunday of October that fills hotels and the waterfront. Summer visitors are mostly Austrians, Slovenians and cruise passengers.
Day trips and UNESCO
Day trips: Muggia by boat; Duino with the Rilke path and Sistiana; Aquileia and Grado (Aquileia is a UNESCO World Heritage site); Gorizia and Nova Gorica, European Capital of Culture 2025; in Slovenia, Lipica, Piran and Ljubljana, little more than an hour away. There are no UNESCO sites within the Comune di Trieste.
