Overview
What kind of city
Avellino has been a provincial capital since the Kingdom of Italy was formed in 1861 and, according to the municipality, is an administrative, commercial and university hub of inland Campania. The name appears in early medieval documents, in the 8th century; the city remembers the Caracciolo period, the plague of 1656 and the earthquakes of 1694 and 1980, the latter killing thousands in the province.
Wine and territory
Taurasi, Greco di Tufo and Fiano di Avellino are the three DOCG wines produced in the province. Since 2006 the Federico II University has run a degree course in Viticulture and Oenology in Avellino, based in viale Italia since 2012, in the city where Italy's first oenological school was founded in 1879.
