Rail
The regional rail network is operated by Trenitalia under contract with the Region: lines Trieste–Monfalcone–Udine–Tarvisio, Venice–Trieste (stopping at the airport), Udine–Pordenone–Venice, Gemona–Sacile (Pedemontana). The Udine–Cividale line is run by Società Ferrovie Udine Cividale, under the direction and coordination of the Region. The MI.CO.TRA. links Udine and Villach with cross-border regional trains funded by the Region and Carinthia, with bicycle transport. Frecce high-speed trains link Trieste and Udine with Venice, Milan and Rome; the Trieste–Ljubljana line has few trains a day.
Buses and fares
Since 11 June 2020 all regional bus transport, urban and suburban, has been entrusted to TPL FVG, formed by Trieste Trasporti, APT Gorizia, ATAP Pordenone and Arriva Udine: a single regional fare system, contactless tickets on board and passes valid across several basins. In Trieste the Opicina tram, long out of service, is running again in 2026, with temporary suspensions for maintenance: check Trieste Trasporti's notices. Seasonal boat services link Trieste, Muggia, Grado and Lignano.
Airport, passes, cycling
Trieste airport (TRS, Ronchi dei Legionari) has its own railway station in the intermodal hub on the Venice–Trieste line, with regional and high-speed trains; for many destinations people also use Venice and Ljubljana. Passes to Austria: Tarvisio–Coccau (A23 motorway and Pontebbana railway, open all year), Monte Croce Carnico pass (Plöcken, closed in snow). The Alpe Adria cycle route (Salzburg–Villach–Tarvisio–Udine–Grado) reuses the old Pontebbana railway and is among the busiest in Europe; the FVG2 links the lagoons.
