Overview

What kind of city it is

Foggia lies at the centre of the Tavoliere delle Puglie. The historic centre has largely survived despite the 1731 earthquake and the Second World War bombings: on 15 July 1943 bombers of the US Ninth Air Force struck the Foggia airfields and then the city, with the heaviest damage around the railway. The main monument is the cathedral, built in the 12th century and altered several times; beneath the centre runs a long series of underground spaces, the most important being the San Domenico hypogeum.

University, industry, connections

The University of Foggia, which began as a branch of Bari's faculties in the late 1980s and has been independent since 1999, has seven departments spread across the city, with Medicine in the Policlinico Riuniti hospital complex. In industry, Leonardo's Foggia plant makes the horizontal stabiliser of the Boeing 787.

The station is served by long-distance and regional trains; Ferrovie del Gargano links the city with Lucera and with Peschici on the Gargano, while ATAF has run urban and suburban transport since 1963.
