Network

AMT (Azienda Mobilità e Trasporti) runs urban transport and, since 2021, provincial services too. The metro is a single line from Brin (Certosa) to Brignole crossing the old town and the Porto Antico (stops Principe, Darsena, San Giorgio, Sarzano, De Ferrari); the Zecca-Righi and Sant'Anna funiculars and the Genova-Casella railway climb to the heights, and a network of public lifts, including the Art Nouveau Castelletto lift from piazza Portello, links the hillside districts. Regional trains between Voltri, Sestri Ponente, Sampierdarena, Principe, Brignole and Nervi are the fastest way along the coast and are included in integrated urban tickets.

Tickets and free travel

AMT tickets and passes are bought in the app, by contactless card on board metro and buses, at ticket offices and resellers; the monthly and annual pass covers buses, metro, funiculars and lifts. From 18 November 2025 the general free metro ended: buses and metro remain free at night (22:00-05:00) and on Sundays for residents of the Metropolitan City holding a CityPass, the whole network for resident under-14s, and over-70s get a discounted annual pass. Rules change often: check the official page.

Trains, airport, ferries

The main stations are Genova Piazza Principe (Ponente side, near the cruise port) and Genova Brignole (Levante side); both serve Intercity and high-speed trains to Milan, Turin, Rome and the Riviera, and regional trains to the Cinque Terre and Ponente. Cristoforo Colombo airport is at Sestri Ponente, on an artificial peninsula a few kilometres from the centre: it is linked by the Volabus from Brignole and Principe, the Genova Airlink shuttle from Sestri Ponente station and taxis. Ferries leave the port for Sardinia, Sicily, Corsica, Spain and North Africa.

  • ZTL: almost the whole old town is a camera-controlled limited traffic zone; residents apply to the municipality for permits. In practice, the caruggi are walked.
  • Parking: the paid Blu Area covers the centre and residential districts with discounted rates for residents; park-and-ride at the metro terminus (Brin) and in the Valpolcevera.
  • Bikes and scooters: the coast has a cycle path along Corso Italia and stretches in the Bisagno valley; the climbs discourage ordinary bikes, and shared e-bikes and e-scooters are widespread.
  • Changes in level: public lifts and funiculars (included in tickets) and the creuze, the old brick mule tracks, are part of the way around.
