Overview

What kind of city

Reggio Emilia lies on the Via Emilia. The centre gathers around Piazza Prampolini, the "Piazza Grande" with the Cathedral, the Baptistery and the Town Hall, linked by porticoes to Piazza San Prospero, site of the traditional market and of the patron saint's basilica. The municipality comprises the city, the historic villages (Ville) and the neighbourhoods.

In its municipal statute the city claims the adoption of white, red and green on 7 January 1797 in the Sala Civica, now the Sala del Tricolore; its banner is decorated with the gold medal for valour in the Resistance.

What it is known for

The network of municipal infant-toddler centres and preschools, built with Loris Malaguzzi, gave its name to the Reggio Emilia Approach, promoted by Reggio Children, a company controlled by the municipality and founded in 1994. Santiago Calatrava designed the Mediopadana high-speed station and the bridges visible from the A1 motorway. Since 1998 the Modena university has been the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia and also has a seat in the city. The tourism site names spring and autumn as the best seasons to visit.
