Navigli

The area of the two canals (Naviglio Grande and Naviglio Pavese) and the Darsena basin, straddling Municipio 6 (Porta Genova, Porta Ticinese) and Municipio 1. Case di ringhiera, pedestrian towpaths, the densest concentration of bars in the city. Suits night people; noisy for those who sleep here.

Overview

For neighbourhoods we only show dedicated figures; otherwise we point to the city page.

Where it is and who it suits

"Navigli" means the area around the Darsena of Porta Ticinese where the Naviglio Grande leaves westwards (Alzaia and Ripa di Porta Ticinese) and the Naviglio Pavese southwards (via Ascanio Sforza, Conchetta). Administratively the part beyond the Darsena is in Municipio 6 (NIL Porta Genova and Porta Ticinese); the part inside the Bastioni, towards corso di Porta Ticinese and the Colonne di San Lorenzo, is in Municipio 1.

Who lives here: a mix of long-standing residents in the case di ringhiera, young professionals, students (IULM and NABA are a few minutes along the Naviglio Grande) and a growing number of tourist flats. It suits people who want bars and street life downstairs; less so anyone who starts work early or has small children and sleeps on a towpath.

Layout and where it comes from

The Darsena, the old city port, reopened to the public in April 2015 after restoration; the neoclassical Porta Ticinese gate and the covered municipal market face piazza XXIV Maggio. Along the Naviglio Grande are the vicolo dei Lavandai, the courtyards of via Vigevano and Ripa di Porta Ticinese; towards Porta Genova the 1870 railway station and its goods yard awaiting redevelopment. The Naviglio Grande was made navigable in the 13th century, the Pavese opened in 1819; the inner ring of canals was covered over in 1929–30, leaving these two stretches as the only open canals in the city.

Evenings, noise and tourism

Nightlife is concentrated on Alzaia and Ripa di Porta Ticinese, via Ascanio Sforza and the Darsena, every evening from April to October and at weekends all year: anyone living on the lower floors facing the canals should expect noise until late. On the last Sunday of the month the Alzaia hosts the Mercatone dell'Antiquariato antiques fair, on Saturdays the Fiera di Sinigaglia at the Darsena; during the Fuorisalone in April the Tortona–Porta Genova area is among the most crowded in Milan. In the side streets (via Vigevano, via Corsico, Conchetta) life is quieter.

Living

  • Cost of living

Italy's most expensive city for renting and buying a home, with central rents far above Rome. Eating out, services and leisure cost more than the national average; public transport and groceries stay in line. Savings come in the outer districts served by the metro and the first-ring municipalities.

    Milan
  • Housing

Case di ringhiera on the canals, 1950s–70s blocks in the side streets, new complexes towards Porta Genova and Tortona. Many short lets, student demand from IULM and NABA. Outside Area C (except the Porta Ticinese side), inside Area B; blue-bay parking with resident permits.

  • Daily life

Covered municipal market in piazza XXIV Maggio, viale Papiniano street market on Tuesdays and Saturdays, the Fiera di Sinigaglia on Saturdays. Parco Don Giussani (Solari) and Parco delle Basiliche for green space, the Fra Cristoforo library on the Naviglio Pavese.

Arriving and staying

  • Entry & residence

Rules depend on who is arriving: EU/EEA/Swiss citizens (no visa, registration with the Comune after three months), non-EU citizens for stays up to 90 days (Schengen rule, type C visa where required) and for long stays (national type D visa and a residence permit within eight working days of arrival).

  • Transport

Porta Genova FS (M2) with trams 2, 9 and 10; tram 3 along corso di Porta Ticinese to the Darsena; Romolo (M2) and the S9 station to the south. Regional trains to Mortara leave from Porta Genova. Malpensa Express from Cadorna via M2.

  • Health

Planning is the job of ATS Città Metropolitana di Milano (corso Italia 52); care is delivered by the city's ASSTs and IRCCS institutes. Among the large public hospitals: the Niguarda (piazza Ospedale Maggiore 3), the Policlinico–Fondazione IRCCS Ca' Granda (via Francesco Sforza 28) and the San Paolo and San Carlo hospitals of ASST Santi Paolo e Carlo.

Work and study

  • Work

Italy's largest and most dynamic job market: finance and insurance, consulting, fashion and luxury, design, media and advertising, pharmaceuticals and life sciences, ICT and startups, fairs. Regional employment rates among the highest in the country. Business districts at Porta Nuova, CityLife, the centre and MIND; coworking in every district.

Italy's largest university hub: Politecnico (engineering, architecture, design), Statale, Bicocca, Bocconi (economics, law, political science), Cattolica, IULM, San Raffaele and Humanitas for medicine, Brera and the Conservatory, plus the fashion and design schools. The English-taught offer is the widest in the country. Student support is managed by each university; housing is the main problem.

  • Climate & environment

Humid Po-plain climate: grey, cold winters with temperature inversions (fog is less frequent than it used to be), hot muggy summers with a strong heat island. Milan is consistently among the Italian provincial capitals with the most days above the PM10 limit; ARPA Lombardia publishes the data and regional and municipal anti-smog measures (Area B) apply.

    Milan
  • Culture & relationships

A country of strong local identities: dialects still spoken at home, cuisines and festivals that differ from region to region. Formality with 'Lei', rigid meal times, slow paper-based bureaucracy. Non-EU citizens with a long-stay permit sign an integration agreement with credits.
