Overview

For neighbourhoods we only show dedicated figures; otherwise we point to the city page.

Where it is and how it is run

Chiaia is one of the three quarters of Municipalità 1 of the Comune di Napoli, together with Posillipo and San Ferdinando. The Comune names as the municipalità's main park the Villa Comunale, in the Chiaia quarter: it began as a royal promenade and became a public park in 1860.

Part of the strip near the sea is land won from the water: according to ANM, the area where Line 6's San Pasquale station now stands was covered by the sea until the nineteenth century and was later filled in by successive land reclamation.

Connections

With the opening of Line 6, inaugurated on 16 July 2024, the quarter has three metro stations: Chiaia, San Pasquale and Arco Mirelli, the last at the western edge of the Villa Comunale, level with piazza della Repubblica. The line runs to Municipio, where you change for Line 1, and westwards to Mergellina, where you change for Line 2, and on to Fuorigrotta.

Volcanic risk

The Civil Protection Department includes part of the Chiaia quarter in the Campi Flegrei red zone, the area where in case of alarm preventive evacuation is the only safeguard measure; Chiaia also appears in the list of quarters of the yellow zone, exposed to possible ash fall. The Campi Flegrei alert level has been yellow since 2012.

Living

  • Cost of living

Naples costs less than the big northern cities for rent, groceries and eating out, but the old centre and the seaside districts have seen sharp rises with tourism. Integrated public transport is cheap. The tourist tax rose in early 2026 and again in March 2026. The cheapest zones are the eastern and northern outskirts and the Fuorigrotta-Soccavo belt.

  • Housing

The boundary of the Campi Flegrei red zone runs through the quarter: before buying or renting it is worth checking which side an address falls on. Reference values from the Osservatorio del Mercato Immobiliare are in the data below.

  • Daily life

The Villa Comunale is the quarter's historic park. The ASL health district serving Municipalità 1 and Capri has its administrative seat in the outpatient clinic at via Schipa 9. Via Rodinò houses Federico II's Political Science library.

Arriving and staying

  • Entry & residence

Rules depend on who is arriving: EU/EEA/Swiss citizens (no visa, registration with the Comune after three months), non-EU citizens for stays up to 90 days (Schengen rule, type C visa where required) and for long stays (national type D visa and a residence permit within eight working days of arrival).

  • Transport

Three stations on Line 6, opened in July 2024: Chiaia, San Pasquale and Arco Mirelli, with a change for Line 1 at Municipio and for Line 2 at Mergellina. In the upper streets around via Crispi and via Schipa, bus service is a problem the municipalità itself has raised.

  • Health

The city is covered by ASL Napoli 1 Centro, organised in ten primary health districts (from 24/73 to 33). The ASL runs five city hospitals (Ospedale del Mare, San Giovanni Bosco, San Paolo, Loreto Nuovo, Pellegrini) and publishes first-aid posts and ambulance stations. Bookings at the CUP desks in its facilities, in pharmacies or online with Campania in Salute.

Work and study

  • Work

Naples' economy is based on services and public administration, with the port (passengers, cruises, freight), fast-growing tourism, health care and an ICT and aerospace cluster revolving around the university and the large companies based in San Giovanni a Teduccio and the metropolitan area. Employment rates are among the lowest of Italy's big cities.

  • Climate & environment

Mild Mediterranean climate, with rainy winters and hot humid summers. Naples lies between two active volcanoes monitored by INGV: Vesuvius, dormant since 1944, and the Campi Flegrei, in a bradyseism phase with ground uplift and frequent earthquakes since 2023, at yellow alert level. Parts of the city fall within the red zones of the evacuation plans.

    Naples
  • Culture & relationships

A country of strong local identities: dialects still spoken at home, cuisines and festivals that differ from region to region. Formality with 'Lei', rigid meal times, slow paper-based bureaucracy. Non-EU citizens with a long-stay permit sign an integration agreement with credits.
