Bolognina
An area of the Navile quartiere next to the central station, close to the centre and convenient for the airport. A former working-class area whose big factories closed in the 1990s, today one of the city's most multi-ethnic areas and changing fast: the Tecnopolo in the former Tobacco Factory, two tram lines, projects on the former fruit and vegetable market.

Overview
Where it is
Bolognina is an area of the Navile quartiere. The Patto ConVivere Bolognina, promoted by the Comune in 2014, describes it as "not far from the centre, close to the station, convenient for the airport" and takes as its reference area the one between via Barbieri, via Fioravanti, via Carracci, via Ferrarese and via Matteotti. Its commercial heart is piazza dell'Unità; the station entrance on via de' Carracci gives direct access to the high-speed platforms.
Where it comes from
In the Casaralta area the working-class presence was tied to factories such as Sasib, Officine Casaralta and Minganti; their closure in the 1990s changed the population and weakened the sense of belonging. The piazza dell'Unità and via Matteotti area, by contrast, was historically commercial and middle-class.
The Comune calls it "an area of great urban and social transformation" and the local library describes it as one of the city's most multi-ethnic areas. In the 2014 participatory process residents named neglect and petty crime as the most keenly felt problems, with evening drug dealing in piazza dell'Unità and via Nicolò dell'Arca, and a sense of insecurity not always matched by actual incidents.
Transformations
For the former Tobacco Factory, the Comune's 2018 dossier listed the creation of the Tecnopolo Bologna Manifattura, a hub for industrial research and technology transfer. For the former fruit and vegetable market site the same dossier planned new housing, a school campus, the Casa della Salute Navile health centre and a cultural centre reusing the historic canopy; via Matteotti is the route of the two tram lines under construction.
