Padua
A university city by definition: the university has eight centuries of history, its historic seat in Palazzo del Bo and a campus spread across the city. Two UNESCO sites, the Botanical Garden (1997) and the fourteenth-century fresco cycles with Giotto's Scrovegni Chapel (2021). One tram line since 2007 and two new ones under construction.

Overview
What kind of city
Padua is first of all the city of its university, which calls itself a "spread-out university campus": teaching sites, research areas and museums are scattered through the urban fabric. The historic seat is Palazzo del Bo, the former Hospitium Bovis, the university's official seat since 1539, where visitors see the historic lecture halls with Galileo's chair and the Anatomical Theatre of 1595, the first permanent one in the world; here Elena Lucrezia Cornaro Piscopia graduated, the first woman to earn a degree. The motto is "Universa universis patavina libertas".
The city has two properties on the World Heritage List: the Botanical Garden, founded in 1545 as the world's first botanical garden and inscribed in 1997, and the fourteenth-century fresco cycles (1302–1397), inscribed in 2021, which include Giotto's Scrovegni Chapel, the Eremitani, the Palazzo della Ragione, the Baptistery, the Basilica of St Anthony complex and San Michele.
Getting around and finding your bearings
The SIR1 tram has crossed the city from north to south, from Pontevigodarzere to Guizza, since 2007; line SIR3 from the station to Voltabarozzo and SIR2 from Rubano to Vigonza are under construction as part of the metropolitan tram system. For newcomers the reference points are the centre around the squares and the Bo, Prato della Valle with the basilica of Santa Giustina, the Santo and the Scrovegni Chapel.
