Overview
What kind of city
Verona lies at the foot of the Lessini Mountains, on the Adige. The old core is the Roman town nestled in the loop of the river; the civic heart is the ensemble of Piazza delle Erbe and Piazza dei Signori. UNESCO inscribed it on the World Heritage List in 2000 as a city that has developed without interruption for two thousand years and as an example of a fortified town: founded in the 1st century BC, flourishing under the Scaligers in the 13th and 14th centuries, Venetian from 1405, Austrian from 1797, Italian from 1866.
The municipality is divided into eight circoscrizioni (districts), from the Centro Storico (Città Antica, Veronetta, Cittadella, San Zeno) to the outer boroughs and villages.
Economy, study, calendar
According to the Chamber of Commerce, in 2025 food became the province's largest export item, ahead of machinery, textiles and clothing, and beverages, mostly wine; Germany is the first market. The Quadrante Europa freight village, run by the Consorzio ZAI, presents itself as Italy's largest "city of goods", and the city's role as a logistics hub also explains the weight of motor-vehicle imports.
The University of Verona, independent from Padua since 1982, has thirteen departments and a Faculty of Medicine and Surgery. In summer the Roman Arena hosts the Arena di Verona Opera Festival, which reaches its 104th edition in 2027.
